Out of Class AssignmentDescription:
Watch the video about Math Practice 5 and do the activity at the end. Given your choice of regular or retractable tape measure, ruler, or yard stick, measure the height of your family or 3-5 people. Write down their heights then given the choice of a calculator or spreadsheet, find the average height within your family or group of people. Once you have done that reflect on what tool you chose and why you chose it. We will discuss in class your reasoning and talk about which tool everyone felt was best in measuring and in calculating.
Math Practice 6
Chrissy
Out of class: Watch my math practice 6 video and you will see me go over why it is really important to attend to precision when it comes to symbols. I would like you to do the problems below and practice the symbol importance. You will see how you can get different answers when it comes to moving symbols around in a problem. Solve these problems and then try and think of other examples where symbols and wording need to be precise. Task:
Evaluate the following numerical expressions a. 2 x 5+3 x 2+4
b. 2 x (5+3 x 2+4)
c. 2 x 5+3 x (2+4)
d. 2 x (5+3) x 2+4
e. (2 x 5)+(3 x 2)+4
f. 2 x (5+3) x (2+4)
Can the parentheses in any of these expressions be removed without changing the value the expression? Discuss your reasoning.
